Primary Crusher Silencing
Summary of the work from Cemex have been doing to reduce noise from the Primary Crusher at Wickwar.  This work is progressive and is not complete as yet.

Wickwar Primary Crusher radiates noise from several different sources.
Beyond some 10metres from the crusher these combine to give the impression of a single noise that can sometimes be heard in the village.

To reduce this noise in a cost effective manner individual sources must be tackled in descending order of loudness.
Tackling any lesser noise first would incur expense without apparent benefit.*
When the dominant source is reduced the next source reveals itself and so on...
,
A good analogy is what happens when peeling an onion: as each successive skin is removed another is revealed.
This technique has been employed on the primary crusher.

In the first phase of silencing Mr Frank Hogg (quarry manager) and his team have reduced noise by 13dBA on the 1st floor & 23dBA on the 2nd floor.
The result is that noise in the surrounding area has been reduced by 6dBA.**
They have done this enclosing the noisiest parts of the crusher.

Because noise energy cannot be ‘lost’, sound inside the enclosure has been mopped-up by absorbent material, a form of ‘acoustic blotting paper’!

So what does this mean to local residents?
A 6dBA reduction means the crusher noise output is now one quarter of what it was.
Had the total noise emanated from four smaller crushers instead of one single large machine then effectively three of them have been turned off1
Or putting it another way: instead of being 1600m from Wickwar village the crusher sounds as though it has been picked up and placed 3200m away, double the distance.***
One person who has already expressed delight is Matt, the crusher operator, who sits high up in the portacabin watching the stone go by.
He says he now has a much more comfortable life!
A useful spin off is raised noise-awareness throughout the entire Wickwar team !

SO WHAT NOW?
Spurred on by success, Frank Hogg and his team have now embarked on peeling the second skin from the onion!

Information
* No matter how loud, if two simultaneous noises are 10dB apart then the lower one makes no contribution to the total level.

**A dBA is a unit of noise that takes account of how our hearing works. 6dBA is a useful reduction, 10dBA halves the loudness.

***The Crusher is a point-source whose level reduces by 6dB with each doubling of distance whereas a road is a line source that reduces by only 3dB with distance doubling

Bold claims.
WRAG have asked Cemex for the supporting evidence and sound report associated with the noise survey. To-date they have not been forthcoming.
