Wickwar Quarry Raised in Parliament

Steve Webb MP has initiated a Parliamentary Debate as a result of hearing the concerns of Charfield and Wickwar residents about the lack of enforcement at the quarry. One of the reasons given by the Council for delaying enforcement was that Government guidelines are that it may not be 'expedient' to enforce when a new planning application is under consideration.

Steve Webb stated:
"I promised at the [recent] meeting to raise this issue with the Government, which I have now done in writing, but also by leading a debate on 'planning enforcement' at Westminster..."

Steve Webb added:
"Inevitably with these debates there is not an instant change of government policy or practice, but it is part of a process of making ministers and civil servants aware of how the system is working (or not working) on the ground, so that they have regard to these things when they are drawing up  legislation.  One of the interesting points made during the debate was that the recent planning white paper actually had precious little to say about enforcement, so this debate may well have helped to redress that balance."
