Wickwar Quarry Lorry movements on 14th June 2007

Graph On 14th June, a number of local residents have counted Lorries passing the Layby on the Downs Road, just northwest of the Quarry entrance. The results are shown in the Graph below. This shows all lorries (e.g. Aggregate, Ready Mix, Block, etc) passing during the day. Interestingly, lorry movements became scarce after 17:00 hrs.

Although we can not be sure that all aggregate lorries heading away from the Quarry actually came from the Quarry, or that no lorries from the Quarry headed towards Wickwar, we counted a high number during the day. The data shows this to be 180 aggregate style lorries heading away from the Quarry and 190 heading towards the Quarry.

The quarry has planning permission for 84 aggregate lorry movements per day. NB a movement is counted as a lorry in and a lorry out.

The quarry is supposed to keep records of their lorry movements, and South Gloucestershire Council are supposed to check these from time to time. However, despite local residents asking to see these records, none have been produced so far. Cemex have admitted that they are over their lorry movement limits. The numbers counted during this exercise suggest that they are well over those limits.

Interestingly, it was also noted that the Coating plant started at 5:09 and was switched off at 22:50. Their current allowed times are 3:30 (!!) until 19:00 Hrs.

The stats are almost unbelievable, although thinking about it you can almost guarantee you will meet at least one lorry whilst traversing this stretch of road...so perhaps not all that surprising.
