Wickwar Quarry Lorry movements on 14th June 2007 |
|
Tuesday, 19 June 2007 |
|
On 14th June, a number of local residents have counted Lorries passing the Layby on the Downs Road, just northwest of the Quarry entrance. The results are shown in the Graph below. This shows all lorries (e.g. Aggregate, Ready Mix, Block, etc) passing during the day. Interestingly, lorry movements became scarce after 17:00 hrs.
Although we can not be sure that all aggregate lorries heading away from the Quarry actually came from the Quarry, or that no lorries from the Quarry headed towards Wickwar, we counted a high number during the day. The data shows this to be 180 aggregate style lorries heading away from the Quarry and 190 heading towards the Quarry. Comments (2) | Views: 1111 |

Escalating the Planning Applications |
|
Thursday, 14 June 2007 |
The following action has been proposed as a way of influencing the outcome of the planning application: It is possible to ask the Government Office for the South West (GOSW) to call-in a major application for decision by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. GOSW might well refuse, leaving the decision to South Gloucestershire Councillors. On the other hand, GOSW might direct S Glos not to issue a planning permission until they (GOSW) had fully considered the circumstances. S Glos could go ahead and decide what they would like to do, but couldn’t issue a permission. GOSW would then consider whether S Glos’s proposed decision was contrary to the Development Plan or raised issues that were more than local. If so, GOSW could call the applications in and a Planning Inspector would be appointed, probably to hold a public inquiry, to consider the evidence and report with a recommendation to the Secretary of State. She would then issue a decision, granting planning permission or not. This process is complicated and may spin out the planning process. The advantages are that the planning application is spotlighted to a wider and more authorative group of officials and it gives us the possibility to have two bites of the cherry. This proposal is being investigated. Please

Post-meeting Update from Steve Webb MP |
|
Friday, 08 June 2007 |
This is to let you know that, following the meeting in Charfield Memorial Hall last night, I have put a report on my web site - www.stevewebb.org.uk There is a link from the home page.
This gives some feedback on the meeting, tells you what I am doing next and also tells you how you can take further action. I shall continue to work with Sandra O'Neill and Howard Gawler to keep you informed and help you to make sure that your concerns are properly heard by the Council.
Best wishes.

Click here for the the handout that was passed out to the Planning Committee at the site visit today. The Gazette was there (published next Thursday) and ITV West (see news tonight at 6:00). The Quarry has also been on the BBC local news this week and on HTV news this morning. The visit seemed to go pretty well. All the Wickwar posters were still hanging when the Committee toured of West End. However all of the ones at Churchend mysteriously disappeared. The roads were swept last night and washed twice this morning and once during the visit. There were water sprinklers active all over the quarry. As time was short we spoke on behalf of the Churchend Residents as well as the Wickwar Residents Action Group. The Committee seemed to ask the right questions. Howard Gawler (our ward Councilor) is now, as of the election last night, a planner. As he has a lot of knowledge about these particular planning applications he cannot vote on the Planning Committee for them (I am not sure this logic makes sense?). He will be representing Wickwar as a Ward Councilor. Comments (1) | Views: 175 |

Steve Webb MP Calls Meeting |
|
Tuesday, 05 June 2007 |
"I have arranged a meeting to give local people an opportunity to discuss the quarry with me and local councillors. Unfortunately, for various reasons, I have had to arrange it at short notice. It will take place at 7pm this Thursday, 7 June, in Charfield Memorial Hall. I very much hope that you will be able to attend. Please feel free to pass this on to your neighbours. To help me with the arrangements, it would be helpful if anyone who plans to attend could let me know, preferably by email, but otherwise by phoning 01454 322100.
Regards, Steve Webb MP"Download your flyer now! Be first to comment this article | Views: 120 |

Quarry Expansion Petition Submitted |
|
Thursday, 24 May 2007 |
|
Well done those involved in organizing the Quarry petition. This has now been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council Planning. The final tally of signatures is 393. This could have been much higher but we ran out of time. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic figure and especially considering that this is out of a population of around 700 households!
I think that this is a strong indication of the negative feeling in Wickwar towards the implications of the Quarry’s planning applications.
